Expression of Interest: Researcher – Kaituhi Māori Career Development

Background

The Māori Literature Trust (MLT) invites expressions of interest from researchers with a strong grounding in kaupapa Māori theory and practice to undertake a research project that will provide MLT with an informed understanding of how to best support the career development of experienced (mid-career) Kaituhi Māori, both within Aotearoa and internationally.

Research Purpose

To explore and identify ways in which MLT can support Kaituhi Māori to achieve sustainable, self-determined and culturally fulfilling literary careers. The research will be informed and guided by the following kaupapa Māori principles:

  • Tino Rangatiratanga (self-determination): How do Kaituhi Māori (within the New Zealand and International literary sector) maintain and control their work through the publishing process? How do they gain knowledge and understanding of the publishing sector? Are they interested in other publishing roles e.g. offering editorial services, being a mentor, teaching, etc?
  • Taonga tuku iho (cultural aspiration): How vital is it for Kaituhi Māori to feel they have contributed to their whānau, hapū and iwi as writers and why?
  • Ako Māori (cultural pedagogy): How important are opportunities for Kaituhi Māori to be in writing spaces where Māori values and practices are normalised and can be explored as part of kaituhi development?
  • Te Reo Māori (articulating te ao Māori): How is te reo Māori being used by Kaituhi? How do we develop capability and capacity in the literary sector to nurture writers of te reo Māori including in publishing sector roles such as reviewers, editors, mentors etc.
  • Manaakitanga (care for others): How do Kaituhi practice community care and self-care? How do they give to and receive generosity from others?
  • Whakawhanaungatanga (relationships): What are the key relationships that Kaituhi Māori hold in support of their writing career? What literary sector roles are important e.g. editorial services, reader reviews, facilitation, mentors for emerging/new writer development?

Research Methods

The appointed researcher will be responsible for the following activities:

  • Conducting a literature review on Māori authorship, mid-career development, and indigenous literary ecosystems.
  • Facilitating one-on-one interviews with selected Kaituhi Māori (10 interviews with follow-up contact if necessary).
  • Designing and delivering two small group discussions (bilingual) to deepen insights.
  • Creating and managing a feedback loop to validate findings with participating writers and final conclusions.

Research Impact

The findings will inform MLT’s strategic support offerings, including future grants, mentorships, professional development, and sector engagement that honour Māori values and aspirations.

Researcher Criteria

We are seeking a researcher who:

  • Is experienced in kaupapa Māori research methodologies.
  • Has strong facilitation skills.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the literary or creative sectors.
  • Can work collaboratively with Kaituhi and the MLT team to uphold practices and principles throughout the process.
  • Can deliver robust, well-communicated findings in both written and oral formats.
  • Is able to complete research and final report by February 2026; associated milestones will be discussed with successful applicant.
